The Beginning of Game Voiceover:
How Does Voice Casting Actually Work?

Going beyond a "nice-sounding voice" — a deep dive into the strategic casting process that truly elevates the final polish of a game.

Greetings from Asrec Studio!

When evaluating a game, story is an indispensable core element. A well-crafted narrative draws players into the universe, but what truly breathes life into that story and creates an emotional bond is, above all, the characters.

At the heart of a character's completion are the voice actors — the ones who give them the breath of life through their voices.

Going beyond a "nice-sounding voice," what goes into the strategic casting that truly elevates the final polish of a game? Let's dive right in!

Step 1: Deep Analysis of the Game Universe & Characters

Casting doesn't start with simply searching for a "good voice." It begins with a deep, fundamental understanding of the game itself. Voice Directors analyze the game's atmosphere and character personalities from multiple perspectives based on the provided materials. We pay close attention to the following key elements:

Tone & Manner

The first priority is to identify the overall tone and mood of the game. Whether the world is bright and cheerful, calm and emotionally deep, or dark and filled with tension significantly shifts the direction of the performance.

For instance, a comical, upbeat game requires dialogue brimming with energy and a rhythmic bounce. Conversely, in an emotionally driven narrative, a subtle and nuanced performance — rather than exaggerated delivery — carries far more weight and emotional authenticity.

Setting the overall Tone & Manner first helps us decide the proper vibe — whether it should be light, calm, or intense. This step is essential because it serves as the roadmap for all our casting and acting direction.

Genre

The genre of the game also serves as a critical benchmark in the casting process.

For instance, anime-inspired titles often call for more stylized, high-energy performances with distinct character traits. On the other hand, projects aiming for a cinematic, movie-like experience require a grounded tone and natural conversational pacing.

If the acting style doesn't align with the genre, the characters can feel out of place or detached from the world — no matter how talented the voice actor is. That's why voice directors look beyond just the "sound" of a voice; they carefully evaluate whether the overall acting style truly harmonizes with the game's core identity.

Character Narrative

The role a character plays within the story is another vital factor.

Whether they are a supportive ally to the protagonist, a villain who creates tension, or a main figure driving the entire narrative, the nature of the required performance shifts accordingly.

We also carefully consider the relationships between characters. For instance, when two characters have contrasting personalities, it is often more effective to have their acting styles contrast as well. By analyzing these relational structures, we can create a well-balanced casting lineup where every character fits perfectly within the ensemble.

Once the analysis of the game world and characters is complete, we move into the heart of the casting phase. But what specific criteria does a Voice Director use when making the final selection? In the next section, we'll explore the key factors our Voice Directors prioritize during the casting process.

Step 2: The Three Crucial Elements of Casting

Once the analysis is complete, we move on to the stage of determining which voice actor is the best fit for each role. Our Voice Directors comprehensively evaluate various candidates, with three key criteria standing out above the rest.

Acting Capability

The first and most fundamental element we look for is, of course, acting capability.

However, this goes beyond just the ability to express emotions. The core is whether an actor can deliver a performance that specifically aligns with the game's genre and the character's unique traits. For instance, an anime-style game requires high-energy and vibrant acting, while a cinematic, realistic game demands a more subtle, naturalistic approach.

Therefore, our Voice Directors first evaluate how effectively an actor can capture the character's mood and emotions while staying true to the specific acting style required by the genre.

Personality

Once an actor's acting capability is proven, their own personality and natural energy become important deciding factors.

What we look for here is not the character's personality, but the voice actor's own temperament. This is because a performance often feels much more organic when the actor's natural disposition aligns with the character they are portraying.

For example, a vibrant and mischievous character can often feel more authentic when voiced by an actor who naturally exudes bright, high-spirited energy in their daily life.

Tone

The final element we consider is the voice tone.

A voice that perfectly matches the character is a key factor in enhancing player immersion. However, we must be careful not to make casting decisions based on tone alone.

Without a solid foundation of acting skills and a deep understanding of the character, even the most beautiful voice can break a player's immersion. This is why voice directors typically evaluate acting capability and natural temperament first, and then use the voice tone as the final touch to complete the perfect casting decision.

Even with these criteria in place, a direct evaluation is still necessary to see which voice actor truly embodies the character. Depending on the project's needs, we may conduct Live Auditions, review candidates using our Voice Database (DB), or clients can choose to entrust the entire casting process to the voice director for a streamlined approach.

Step 3: Casting Methods

Casting is conducted in various ways depending on the project's scale, schedule, and budget. Voice directors and studios typically utilize the following methods.

Live Audition

A Live Audition involves voice actors visiting the studio in person to record character lines as part of the selection process. This is the most intuitive evaluation method because it allows us to see firsthand how an actor interprets and performs the character.

One of the biggest advantages is that the voice director can provide real-time direction and adjust the acting style on the spot. This ensures an accurate assessment of the "chemistry" between the actor and the character.

While this method requires more time and resources — including talent scheduling and studio sessions — it remains the most reliable way to find the perfect match for a character.

Database (DB) Casting

DB Casting involves selecting candidates using the extensive collection of voice samples maintained by the studio. This method is highly efficient as it allows us to quickly narrow down potential candidates by reviewing a wide variety of pre-recorded voice tones and acting styles.

However, since these samples are not the actual lines from a specific project, there can be slight limitations in seeing exactly how a voice actor will embody your unique character.

Studio Casting

In this model, the voice director takes full responsibility for the casting process. From shortlisting candidates to making the final selection, the director manages everything — so clients don't need to go through a separate, time-consuming audition process.

This is particularly advantageous when an experienced voice director is involved, as they can rapidly identify and secure voice actors who perfectly align with the game's atmosphere and character profiles.

Through this meticulous journey — analyzing the game's world, evaluating voice talent, and selecting the most effective casting method — a voice is chosen that truly fits the game. It is through these voices that in-game characters finally begin to breathe and come to life. Ultimately, it is the accumulation of these precise steps that results in high-quality game voiceover.
